How to Dress for Your Newborn Photography Session:

Congratulations on your new baby! As you prepare for your newborn photography session, one of the biggest questions you might have is: “What should we wear?” The right wardrobe choices can really pull the whole photo session together. Here are some tips to help you decide how to dress for your newborn photography session.

What to Wear for Your Denver Newborn Photography Session

Keep It Simple and Neutral:

Neutral tones like whites, creams, beiges, soft grays, and pastels work beautifully for newborn photos as these are simple colors. These colors create a timeless and natural look that won’t distract from the focus of your photos: your precious baby.  When you wear simple colors or soft colors, the baby will still pop when you’re holding them.  Avoid loud patterns or too bright of colors, as they can take away attention from the newborn and create a distraction.

Coordinate, Don’t Match:

Family members don’t need to wear identical outfits or be too matchy-matchy, but coordination is key and can really make a photo look 3d.   Choose a color palette of 2-3 complementary colors and stick to using those colors only. For example, mom could wear a soft beige dress, dad in a light gray shirt, and siblings in a color that pops a bit more like a soft blush or pastel. This helps create a cohesive look and can bring the whole photo together and make it look perfect.

Dress Comfortably:

Newborn sessions are typically calm and intimate, so wear something you can move and relax in, especially for mom’s since they may be sore or in pain.  Flowy dresses for moms work wonderfully, as they add elegance and allow for comfort, but also photographs beautifully. Dads can opt for well-fitted shirts or sweaters paired with casual pants.  Sometimes doing no shirt for dad is an option too.  Skin to skin is always beautiful!   Kids should wear soft, comfy clothes that let them play and cuddle with their new sibling.  The studio can be very warm because we heat it before you arrive, so always bring layers you can take off after the family photos.

Textures Add Depth:

Incorporating textures like knits, lace, or linen can add depth and visual interest to your photos without being overpowering the baby. A chunky knit sweater or a delicate lace dress can elevate the look while keeping it soft, elegant, and beautiful. Textures work especially well in Denver’s natural light, adding warmth to your images.

Keep Baby at the Center:

For your newborn, simplicity is key. Many Denver photographers provide wraps, swaddles, and blankets in many colors that complement your family’s outfits. If you’d like to bring your own, choose soft fabrics that are gentle on your baby’s skin and make sure the fabric isn’t too long to where we lose baby in it.  Most newborn photographers have outfits, accessories, and wraps that will match something you choose to wear.

Consider the Season:

Denver’s weather can vary, so consider the season when planning your wardrobe. In winter, cozy knits and warm tones create a comforting feel, while lighter fabrics and airy colors are perfect for spring and summer sessions. INo matter the season, always wear layers or dress semi-cool because the studio will be hot to keep baby sleepy.

Avoid Logos and Graphics:

Logos, slogans, and graphics can distract from the emotion and beauty of your photos.  If you choose to wear something with a logo or distraction, most photographers will probably end up taking it out in photoshop. Stick to solid colors or subtle patterns that enhance the timelessness of your session and really pop baby in the photos.

Plan Ahead:

Take the time to try on outfits before your session to ensure everything fits well and looks good together. Lay the outfits side-by-side to see how they coordinate, and take a picture to send to your photographer to ask them their opinion. This step can save stress on the day of the shoot, and the photographer will already know what you will be wearing so they can have a backdrop ready to go.

Trust Your Photographer:

Many Denver newborn photographers have years of experience and can offer valuable guidance for their new clients. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice or share photos of your wardrobe choices for feedback to see if it matches your photographers style.  If you have no idea how to even begin, see if your photographer can send you examples in pictures of where to start!  Some photographers even have websites that offer this such as Style and Select.
