Colorado is a paradise for local Denver family photographers. It offers breathtaking mountain scenery, gorgeous rivers and lakes, and eye-popping sunsets for everyone to enjoy. Whether you want to capture candid moments, milestone sessions, or holiday portraits, there is a location near Denver to fit your family’s needs. Here are my top five mountain locations for family photography near Denver.

5 Gorgeous Mountain Locations Near Denver for Family Photography

Flatiron Vista Trailhead:

Located just 16 miles west of Denver, Flatirons Vista Trailhead is one of the prettiest and most secluded areas I have been to. The golden hour light creates a magical glow, making it ideal for family portraits. It’s not as busy as Chautauqua Park, and every once in a while, you not only get the breathtaking views but a few times we have been there, there were cows all over, making it look very “Colorado.”

Mount Falcon Park West Trailhead:

With panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains and Denver skyline, Mount Falcon Park West is a must-visit for family photographers. Located in Morrison, this park features open meadows, rocky tops, and historic castle ruins. Sunset sessions here are particularly stunning, with the warm light casting long shadows over the rolling hills, making for intimate family connection.

Chautauqua Park:

Chautauqua Park in Boulder is a must for family photography if you live in Colorado! It offers the most breathtaking views of the Flatirons.  In the springtime, usually around May or June, the most beautiful yellow flowers bloom and it makes this location look like a scene from, “The sound of Music.”

Pro Tip: If you do plan to use Chatauqua Park for any of your future Denver family photography needs, please plan to arrive early, as it is a hotspot for photographers all over Colorado and parking spots go quick.

Golden Pond Park:

This location is great if you want to get a good silhouette of the Rocky Mountain range and aren’t interested in venturing too far from Denver. You can really see the mountain range from here.  After a decent walk you also get access to a beautiful waterfall spot, and several gorgeous lakes along the way that make for a very picturesque and dreamy backdrop.

Rocky Mountain National Park – Bear Lake:

One of the most iconic locations in Colorado, Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park is a photographer’s haven. This one’s for the adventurers who want to go a little further from Denver and enjoy all of Colorado’s beauty.  Surrounded by pine trees, dramatic peaks, and beautiful lakes, this spot offers year-round beauty, from colorful fall foliage to snow-covered winter landscapes. Sunrise and sunset sessions are highly recommended to avoid crowds and capture the best lighting for beautiful family portraits.

Final Thoughts:

Denver’s proximity to stunning mountain locations makes it a fantastic place for family photographers looking for breathtaking backdrops. Whether you’re shooting playful candid shots, classic posed portraits, or seasonal holiday sessions, these locations offer endless possibilities.  The art you can hang on your walls after this is rustic and breathtaking with the mountains in the background.
