Keeping Your Newborn Calm During A Newborn Session:

As a professional Denver newborn photographer, I know that keeping an infant baby calm and relaxed during a photoshoot requires skill, patience, and the proper techniques. Keep in mind that not all babies are the same. Some need more food, a good burp, and some require a good poop to satisfy them. There is an art and an understanding in knowing what each newborn needs.  When your baby is comfortable, parents can relax and enjoy the experience, resulting in beautiful, timeless newborn portraits. Here are my top tips for keeping your newborn calm during a newborn session.

Keeping Your Newborn Calm During A Newborn Session

Keep Your Studio Warm and Cozy:

Babies are accustomed to the warmth of the womb, so maintaining a studio temperature of around 80-85°F is essential. A warm environment helps babies feel safe and secure, making it easier for them to achieve those adorable, sleepy, squishy poses that we are accustomed to seeing in newborn photography. Newborn comfort is key to capturing stunning images that parents will treasure forever. Another friendly tip to ensure your newborn sleeps during their session is to use white noise. Make sure to have your white noise machine going for added insurance.

Ensure Baby is Well-Fed:

Is there anything better than food? Probably not. A full belly makes for a sleepy baby! We always encourage our parents to feed their baby just before arriving at the studio or upon arrival. I always allow time for feedings to ensure baby is comfortable, content, and ready for their newborn portraits. Often times babies will come in too tired to eat or they will eat very little, then fall asleep.  Do not panic, we stop and eat multiple times throughout the session if need be. The key is to make sure they have milk in their bellies at all times.

Start with a Secure Swaddle Wrap:

We always begin every newborn session with a simple swaddle wrap, using a reliable Velcro swaddle from Walmart. Don’t over think the swaddle, keep it simple and reasonably priced, it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. This keeps the baby snug and secure and really helps get them in a “milk drunk” state.  I then layer a soft, neutral-toned swaddle blanket on top to add texture and warmth. Swaddling not only soothes babies but also allows for easy posing and prop photography. Try swaddling at the very beginning and see if your babies sleep a little more soundly.

The Two-Hour Rule:

We totally understand the difficulty in this request!  Keeping a newborn awake is NOT EASY! However, keeping the baby awake 2 hours prior to the beginning of the session can make all the difference in the world.  When a newborn baby sleeps at their session it immediately emanates a calming effect throughout the studio.  It shows your client you know what you’re doing and allows them to trust you even more.  While we as photographers cannot 100% enforce this rule, all WE ask is that you try.
