Newborn photography is a heartwarming way to capture those fleeting first moments of life and using props is a great addition to really make your photos stand out. As a Denver newborn photographer, having the right props can make all the difference in creating stunning, timeless images that families will cherish forever! I am going to go over my top 5 newborn props that I have used over the years and explain what I love about each of them!
One of the most essential props in newborn photography is having all kinds of different wraps These versatile props keep babies snug and content while adding texture, color, and versatility to your photos. Neutral tones like beige, cream, and soft gray work beautifully for classic looks, while pastel colors can add a playful touch and colorful look! Wraps in addition can be used for cute slings or swings! Here is an example:
Why it works: Wrapping mimics the feeling of being in the womb, helping newborns stay calm and helps them to sleep longer.
Baskets and bowls are iconic props in newborn photography and can be used for years as the style never gets old. They create a cozy nest-like environment and offer a variety of creative options. Choose props made of natural materials like wicker, or wood to create rustic vibes. Denver has a very western, and boho vibe so it goes well with anything in the client’s homes usually. Line the baskets with soft blankets or faux fur for added comfort, texture and visual appeal. Here is one of my favorite baskets:
Pro tip: Ensure the props are stable and well-padded to keep the baby safe and comfortable. Use pillows to help with comfort.
A collection of different colored textured blankets and layering fabrics is essential for creating depth and interest in your images. These props can serve as a background, padding, or even a wrap so the options are endless. Always opt for high-quality materials that are gentle on a newborn’s delicate skin and always choose a color that doesn’t clash with their skin. When working in Denver, consider using neutral or earthy tones that reflect the beauty of Colorado’s landscapes, and match the artwork in people’s homes.
Styling idea: Layer blankets of different textures and tones to create a visually rich and cozy setup.
Accessories like hats, headbands, and bonnets can add a personalized touch to your newborn photography, and having many of these gives your clients a variety to choose from when they arrive. Choose items that are simple, delicate, and appropriately sized for newborns. Etsy is a great place to look for these things, and they usually fit perfectly. Floral headbands, knitted bonnets, or even themed fun accessories can highlight the baby’s personality while keeping the focus on their adorable features.
Denver-inspired tip: Incorporate accessories with subtle mountain or floral designs to pay homage to the local environment. Boho is always a great neutral look too.
Seasonal or themed props can make your Denver newborn photography sessions stand out. Our photography studio has been collecting props for 12 years, and we love giving our clients the best variety possible. I want to have everything they could possibly want! For instance, a small pumpkin for a fall session, a tiny Santa hat for the holidays, or miniature camping gear for an outdoorsy Colorado theme can add a unique and memorable touch to your newborn session. Just make sure these props are subtle and don’t overshadow the baby. Every once in a while, you can go all out and do a really fun theme but make sure the rest of the photos stick to more of babies tiny details, and things they will cherish forever.
Client connection: Before the session, ask your clients if they have a specific theme in mind to make the photos more meaningful. I always send out a questionnaire to gather information from the client about what they are thinking for the style, colors, and vibe of the session!

While props are essential for creating beautiful newborn portraits, safety should always be your top priority. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:
